What Are the Different Types of Abortion?

When you're considering an abortion—or just want to know your options—it helps to understand the different types available. Each method is safe, effective, and backed by decades of medical research.

In this post, we’ll break down the two main types of abortionmedication abortion and procedural abortion—so you can know what to expect and what might work best for your needs.

1. Medication Abortion (a.k.a. the Abortion Pill)

What it is:
A medication abortion uses two pills—mifepristone and misoprostol—to end a pregnancy. It’s available up to 10–12 weeks of pregnancy, depending on the provider.

How it works:

  • Step 1: Mifepristone blocks the hormone that supports pregnancy
  • Step 2 (taken 24–48 hours later): Misoprostol causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus

Most people take the pills at home, but some clinics also offer in-person services. In those cases you take the first pill in clinic, and often come back for a follow-up appointment.

What to expect:

  • Cramping that can be intense.
  • Heavy bleeding that may last for a several hours
  • Symptoms like nausea, chills, or fatigue
  • Symptoms last only a day or two for most people

How effective?
Over 95% effective when used correctly.

Things to know:

  • You may be quite uncomfortable for a day or two, so have a care plan in place.
  • Some supplies that may make your experience more comfortable:
    • Overt the counter pain medicine, such as Tylenol or Advil
    • Hot water bottle or heating pad
    • Super-absorbent menstrual pads
    • Herbal teas such as mint, chamomile, passionflower, raspberry leaf
  • Online abortion pill providers can work with your insurance or with abortion funds to cover costs.
  • Abortion funds might also be able to help cover additional costs, such as childcare.

Where to get it:

  • Local options may be limited in the Eastern Sierra, so telehealth may be the fastest route. See our list of virtual providers.
  • Plan C also lists safe online providers
  • Local doctors may be able to prescribe it for you, but Inyo and Mono county hospitals choose not to advertise it as a service.

2. Procedural Abortion (a.k.a. Surgical Abortion)

What it is:
This is a medical procedure done in a clinic or hospital to safely end a pregnancy. It’s available at different stages, depending on provider and location.

Early Stage: Aspiration (Suction) Abortion

  • Usually done between 6–14 weeks
  • Takes about 5–10 minutes
  • Mild sedation may be offered
  • A gentle suction device empties the uterus

Later Stage: Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)

  • Done after 15+ weeks
  • May require more dilation and stronger sedation
  • Still very safe when performed by trained professionals
  • Can be more difficult to access.

What to expect:

  • Mild to moderate cramping afterward, usually clears up after 24 hours
  • Some bleeding may occur
  • Quick recovery for most people
  • Access may require travel, especially in rural California

How effective?
Over 99% effective.

Things to know:

  • Wear comfortable clothes such as sweats or pajamas
  • You might be uncomfortable for up to 24 hours after the procedure. Have over the counter pain medicine and a hot water bottle or heating pad available.
  • Abortion funds can help cover the cost of the procedure and might also be able to help cover additional costs, such as childcare and travel expenses.
